But before you go signing a contract, there are a few things you should know about how to get the best deal.
Larger Units Cost More
It should come as no surprise that larger self-storage units tend to cost more than their smaller counterpart. Some of the smallest units, for instance, consist of a 5' x 5' square-shaped facility, whereas larger units may reach sizes of 10' x 25' -- sometimes even larger. The 5' x 5' units typically cost under $50 bucks per month, whereas a 10' x 25' unit may cost several hundred dollars per month. Assuming you only need a small amount of space, it's best to stick with a smaller unit for this reason alone.
Consider the Contract Length
While some self-storage facilities offer pay-as-you-go plans, meaning you pay on a month-to-month basis, most require tenants to sign a contract. Contract lengths can range from 3 months to 2 years, with intervals in between. Generally speaking, you can expect to pay more for a self-storage unit when you sign up for a short-term agreement, such as 3-month or 6-month term. If you're willing to sign a 1 or 2-year agreement, however, you can save big bucks in the long run.
Is Climate-Controlled Necessary?
Being able to control the temperature and humidity of your self-storage unit may sound nice, but is it really a feature that you need? Depending on what you intend to store, the answer could be yes or it could be no. If you plan on storing items that are resilient to fluctuating climates (e.g. plastic and synthetic materials), then it's perfectly okay to choose a unit without climate control. But if you're using it to store hardwood furniture and clothes, you should choose a climate-controlled facility. Climate-controlled units tend to cost more than their non-climate-controlled counterpart, so keep this is mind when choosing a unit.
Rather than signing an agreement with the first self-storage facility that you come across, spend some time calling around and getting price quotes from multiple facilities. Just like insurance companies offer different rates, so do storage facilities. By price comparing the different rates, you can come away with the best possible price.
