Storage Unit Auction Hunters, Come on Down!

It’s Throwback Thursday, once again, and I was thinking about the evolution of day time game shows. I know for me, I may have exaggerated just how under the weather I was back in elementary school simply to catch The Price is Right around 11am. Even at 11 years old, I was always testing out new techniques to raise the mercury in that thermometer a few extra degrees or get my hands nice and clammy. Thanks, Ferris Bueller. Nowadays, scoping …

Dave Hester Ordered to Pay Legal Fees to A&E and Original Productions!

A verdict has been reached in the tedious legal battle between Dave Hester and  A&E and Original Productions, the company who produces Storage Wars. In December, Hester was fired from Storage Wars, and sued A&E and the producers of the show for wrongful termination. Hester alleged that the show was staged to a large extent, and that lockers were “salted” with merchandise prior to filming for the purposes of the show. Hester claimed that upon complaining and refusing to participate …

How Auction Hunters Stacks Up…

It should be no secret to anyone who regularly reads the blog that I love pop culture and fancy myself a television aficionado. In my opinion, television is an art form, and in recent years with the rise of cable programming becoming more and more popular, television only gets better. The story telling is just as good if not better than most movies because the medium allows time for stories to grow and breathe over the course of years, and …

Remembering Mark Balelo

As most of you have probably heard by now, Mark Balelo of Storage Wars passed away over the weekend and was found on Monday. Sure he liked to annoyingly up bid everybody and once made the unfortunate mistake of valuing a worthless Nintendo as being worth over $13,000. But the man did have a penchant for snazzy fashion ensembles that I for one, will greatly miss. We reported the news to you yesterday afternoon via Facebook and other social media, …

Happy Saturday, everyone! We’re here again with the best of the week in storage auction news! Dave Hester Raises Money for Lupus LA Breaking news–everybody’s favorite mogul: the cold, heartless Dave Hester–actually has a heart of gold! How Does Auction Hunters Measure Up?

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times: storage auction shows are addictive, to a lot of different demographics.  Sure, we’ve speculated as to why—the surge of reality TV meets the downfall of the traditional game show, meets the desire to restore the American Dream, where the streets are paved with gold and everyone is making their own way. And Boom!  Now people want to watch something simple yet complex, something that fuels the imagination while simultaneously informing …

StorageUnitAuctionList Tips: A Concise Guide to Self-Appraising Gold

What does Ron Paul mean when he talks about “getting back to the gold standard?”  Well, other than being a cute, elfish little idealist at times, gold and other metals used to be the objective standard by which to measure an economies wealth.  This is mostly due to the fact that coins in Europe and early America were actually minted from gold and silver.  Although this is no longer the case, because it is a useful, rare substance, gold still …

David Hester’s Hunter Heroism? Let the Debate Begin!

I will never grow tired of the phenomenon of television making overnight celebrities out of people.  If any of the Storage Wars stars have caused anything of a stir on the interweb, then it’s the notoriously loved/hated David Hester.  There is seemingly no reason that an owner of a consignment shop and storage auction junkie should be on par with professional athletes or film makers, but, it is what it is.   However, the most interesting thing about Hester’s stardom …

2 Uplifting Storage Units Chocked with German Gear

If you read yesterday’s blog, you would have read a deconstruction of a “Storage Wars: Texas” episode, where seemingly out of place items were magically discovered in all three hunter’s newly acquired units.  Hopefully, you learned a few things in the process of reading my intentionally caustic episode review, and maybe even gotten a few laughs. Yet, I can’t help but have the wool plucked from my eyes after reading so many up to date, interesting treasure stories today.  Stories …

Get from Starstruck to Gold Struck: Win the Private Battles

Winning a war is really achieved by winning a series of battles.  The sum of its parts is always greater than the whole. The ever entertaining A&E reality show “Storage Wars” deliberately hypes up the theatrical element to make going to storage auctions look like a daily epic war among kingpins, and of course we love it. But just as your tactics may change in playing a local poker discovered on Craigslist versus being pushed to the limit on every hand at …

Stowing it for Some Other Life: A History of Self-Storage

“Let’s start from the very beginning, a very good place to start,” sang Julie Andrews in the chipper film classic, “The Sound of Music.” Let’s take a note out of her staff and apply this approach to the self-storage world: How did America go from a blank, big sky country to the self-storage empire that is has become, boasting a staggering 2.35 Billion square feet of storage space and giving birth to nearly eighty percent of the world’s storage unit …

What are Buyer’s Premiums?

A buyer’s premium is a fee added to the total cost of an item or unit auctioned. It is generally around 10%, and is added to the final bid price at the end of the auction. This normally covers the auctioneer’s expenses such as cataloging and inventory of items auctioned. Lucky for you, buyer’s premiums are not normally utilized at storage auctions. Most professional storage auction bidders will refuse to participate in a bin auction that has a buyer’s premium, …

Bin Auctions Versus Piece Auctions

Bin auctions, are the bread and butter for professional storage bin buyers. The word “bin” refers to the actual storage unit itself, including everything inside of it. Bin auctions are generally more common than piece-by-piece auctions. The bin auctions are the type seen on A&Es show Storage Wars—you know the deal: the doors go up, you take a peek inside, and the winner gets all. There is an element of mystery when you buy a unit, because you’re not allowed …
